Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now
When I was young I stood at the sink washing dishes when suddenly the drinking glass I was cleaning shattered in my hand. As I was pulling my hand out of the water, a jagged piece of glass caught my right hand and sliced it wide open, just underneath my thumb.
I’ll never forget that day because at the first sight of blood I passed out cold.
The sight of that gash in my hand was more than my mind…or my heart…could take.
And dreaming? It feels just like being cut right in two. We have the choice to live life God’s way or the world’s.
It’s living a life that has meaning and purpose ordained by God in a “me-first” world that values material success and fame at all costs more than the individual person.
I’ve had dreams and plans fail when I was certain they were from God.
It’s like the slow bleed of an outside wound, only it’s on the inside and it’s my heart.
I’ve felt vulnerable from wearing my heart on my sleeve, and I’ve spent time wondering how will my dream play out; how will it be perceived and will it succeed?
There’s no scarier journey than when God lays a dream on your heart and suddenly you are forced with the decision to move out of your comfort zone. You feel completely overwhelmed by the call, but you decide to go for it anyways.
Last year, my word for the year was Fearless. When I step out and do things on my own, like starting a business or boldly writing about radical faith when everyone around me is lukewarm, immediately the waves of fear and doubt start rising against me.
What if I fail? What if I look foolish?
What will people think of me? Can I push through even if everyone else thinks I’m crazy?
I take my eyes off God and put them squarely on my circumstances and what I lack.
Suddenly I’m like Peter walking on the water toward Jesus. My faith falters, and I feel myself starting to sink.
Deeper and deeper and deeper.
But God is calling me out to deeper waters of faith. Not to let me sink, but to learn to walk on water with Him. He promises to lead and be my guide.
Dive for dream
or a slogan may topple you
(trees are their roots and wind is wind)
trust your heart if the seas catch fire (EE Cunnings)
When we go for what we want, we will find it’s what we need.
Don’t listen to a world full of naysayers because their words will shift like the wind.
If everyone else is doing the same thing, trust your heart…your God, to walk a different path.
God is calling YOU out onto deeper waters. Where you can’t trust in reasoning. It’s a world that’s unfamiliar, where your feet will fail…and on your own, they will.
You have to reach out to Him and keep reaching.
Don’t look down.
Keep looking out and up at the One who calls you to Him. He will be with you every step of the way. He will fulfill the purpose to which you’re called.
I still wear the scar on my hand from that day over 20 years ago. I also still wear the scars from failed hopes and dreams on my heart.
But God has redeemed my life and He has never failed me and I know He won’t fail me now.
Where feet may fail, faith will carry us the rest of the way.
God is calling us out onto the water. It’s time to get started on what He’s called us to do.
