What do God-sized Dreamers do FIRST?
Yes, you read that right. Nothing. Having a God-sized dream, acknowledging that you’ve heard a call on your life requires a particular kind of obedience. (<==== Click to tweet) It’s been my experience in taking this faith journey with my dreaming sisters that as a group, we tend to be goal-oriented, driven, self-motivated folks, the type inclined to try new things and bring them to completion. At various levels, with differing motivations and experiences, we are the go-get ‘em types that get things done. However, it is also my experience that the thing God-sized dreamers achieving their dreams have in common is this…early on, they do NOTHING.
Why? There are several reasons. One, simply acknowledging the existence of a dream planted by God within the deepest part of you that you are choosing to embrace and pursue is a scary thing. Moving forward demands right orientation…right relationship with God, as described in Isaiah 55. That does not mean that those “goal-oriented, driven, self-motivated…go-get ‘em types” start moving ahead with a plan, no, quite the contrary. These are planning people. But what they are more than anything…what you are more than any other thing, is prepared to SURRENDER. The first thing to do in pursuit of that God-Sized Dream is aptly described by Mimi Dixon,
“In the uncertainty and suspense of not knowing, we learn to keep our eyes wide open, scanning the horizon of our experience for evidence of God’s leading. Like Noah we may have to do this for a long time before at last a spring sprig signals that there is land ahead. Like Paul and his near-sinking boatload, we would be wise to feast ourselves again and again on signs of promise and hope even as we are tossed about on the sea of not knowing.”
It would be easy/normal/expected to be overwhelmed by not only the enormity of having a dream, but knowing what to do first when God calls. And that is why we rely upon God. Paul gave us goodly counsel when he wrote to the church at Philippi,
being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
So, here is your next assignment. Say it aloud. Confess to someone you trust, someone who loves you, someone who might laugh BUT will then embrace you and high five you at the same time. Confess that you suspect God is leading you somewhere and that you think you ought to go along. And then, like Noah, scan your horizons for evidence, seek out signs of promise, pray without ceasing. That’s it. Do NOTHING, until you hear next from God. It won’t take long, for Our Father moves at the speed of Light. Be confident, because He who placed that dream within you and nurtures that burning desire WILL carry it on to completion.
