Start Dreaming

Start Dreaming

Five years ago I entered an online community that still exists today. I really had no idea what I was getting into becoming part of a launch team for a brand new book. I had never been part of a launch team. I had never even been part of an online anything really.

We had to apply to the launch team and one of the questions on the application was about our own dream. I remember not being sure how to answer. So I think I wrote down that I wanted to write a book and publish it. As we prepared for the launch Holley Gerth coached us and encouraged us and prodded us toward dreaming big, God-sized dreams.

Perhaps you’re a little scared to dream because you’ve been disappointed one too many times. I understand, but here’s the thing, there IS a dream inside you. A God-sized one. One that might stick out a little and feel a bit impossible.

Newsflash –

If it’s God-sized it SHOULD feel a little impossible, maybe a LOT impossible.

Over these next weeks many of us who were part of that team and some who’ve joined are going to go back through the book that started all this, You’re Made For a God-Sized Dream by Holley Gerth. If you haven’t picked up a copy you might want to get one. It’s a step by step guide through the dreaming process.

More

Chapter 1 is “The “More” You Were Made For”. Your more and my more aren’t the same. I’m a Canadian farmer’s wife with six kids. You might be from Hawaii, single and upwardly mobile. We might be different as night and day in every way but this one…we’re both made for more than what we can see or imagine.

God has big things in mind for us. Your big and my big aren’t going to be the same. I may never move off this farm or maybe I’ll start touring the world with my husband, speaking and sharing the music and wisdom God has given us as we’ve raised our kids and lived out the dream that we’re currently in. You might hit the big screen or a corporate boardroom or foster a gaggle of children, write books or design clothing.

Your dream and my dream are different but both are equally important to the kingdom of God!

I looked back at some of the posts I wrote while part of that launch team. I made a HUGE list of dreams I wanted to see happen. I say WANT because they are still part of me, some of them have changed, some of them haven’t come close to happening and some I am in the middle of.

LIES

In chapter one Holley lists some lies that you might be believing:

  1. Dreaming is selfish.
  2. I don’t have what it takes
  3. It’s too late
  4. I don’t deserve to dream
  5. I don’t have time

“The lies don’t ever go away. Every step of your dream, they will chase you. It doesn’t mean that you’re not spiritual enough or you’re on the wrong path. It just means that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:12). You are in a battle – expect opposition.” ( pg 26)

TRUTH

The truth is that God has a purpose and a plan for you and He WILL prevail. He WANTS to give you a dream and He WANTS to see it accomplished. God is on your side. So let’s dream.

Grab your book and go to the end of the chapter, there is a Go Deeper Guide – a printable version is available at www.holleygerth.com on the “Books & More” page. There are great exercises to get you thinking and dreaming.

You’re braver than you think and you’re already awesome so let’s do it, let’s dream together!!

I love this encouragement today! I can’t shake the idea to make a list of dreams! Somewhere along the way it’s been all to easy to forget to dream, to brush them under the rug, or only focus on one little aspect of a dream. God is the God of all the dreams. Excited to start dreaming again 🙂

Lani, I’m one of those who has been afraid in the past to put words around dreams, the audacity of it all just seeming like too much. But then there’s the truth that God is too much for me to understand or to limit with my faithlessness. Thanks for beautiful words from the Truth North that shake up my dreaming as well as my faith.

I read Holley’s book several years ago. Like all of her writing, it inspires.

Thank you for your encouragement, Lani! I’m enjoying going back through the book so much. The Going Deeper Guide suggested making a vision board. I need to make that my next project! There’s something good about seeing your goals laid out in front of you.

I do believe that when God gives us a dream it will often be bigger than we would ever dream on our own!

I struggle with the lies you listed regarding my dream on a regular basis…it’s one this day and another on the next…I fight back with the TRUTH!

Lani, I like the quote “all God dreams should be a little impossible.” I’m going mull that one around for a while. Great post for a new year.

I agree all dreams should feel a little impossible. Too many times we go for safe and sell ourselves short. Thank you! I am gong to do a little dreaming and see what 2018 might hold. Maree
