On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome Kathy Cheek back to God-sized Dreams. She shares a story to remind us that what we do matters. Thanks for being here again today, Kathy!
I am just one small voice in an ever increasing arena of hundreds and thousands of voices that desire to write words of encouragement and truth as we travel our faith journeys. What a great opportunity we have to share our messages of hope and do this online from our blogs and websites in the individual style God has given each of us.
From the quiet places of my heart I write the tender words He gives me of love, faith and relationship with Him.
There are seasons as a writer when I wonder how much impact my words have. There are times when I am discouraged because I can’t see what God is doing through my writing.
Last year I received an email from a lady who had just found my devotional blog online. She wrote me to tell me that her 99 year old grandmother has a poem of mine cut from a magazine and taped to a piece of cardboard. She has been carrying it around with her for many years now. She even sings it to a tune she made up. It is a poem “When It’s Just You and Me” that was published in the LifeWay magazine Mature Living in September 2008.
Then, her granddaughter found me online and wrote an email to me and shared how excited she and her grandmother are to read my devotions and how much they are encouraged by them.
As it turned out, they also live in the Dallas area. What a blessing this was to me because there are people from many states and other countries that read my devotions on my website. Because they lived in my area, we were able to meet and have a special time of fellowship together. God brought all of that together!
You just don’t know what God is going to do. He gave me this beautiful grandmother’s story as one example of how He is using my writing to bless others. Sometimes God gives us a unique glimpse of His invisible work on our behalf and it spurs us on to keep doing the work we are called to do.
As the weeks went by and I continued to be encouraged by what God had done, I knew I needed to share the story. I contacted the editor of Mature Living and told her the story. She was so touched by details that she decided to send one of their writers to interview the three of us and make it a special three page feature story in the 40th Anniversary issue of Mature Living which comes out in April 2017.
It all started with a simple and short poem about spending time with the Lord and what that special time means to me. And like everything I write, I don’t know who all will read it and if/how it will bless anyone.
But, this time, God gave me an amazing glimpse of what He does in the most unique way and He did this at a time when I was in great need of encouragement in my writing. I definitely learned that you can never know what God is going to do next.
You do not know what you are going to do; the only thing you know is that God knows what He is doing…. It is this attitude that keeps you in perpetual wonder–you do not know what God is going to do next. ~ Oswald Chambers
