Most of the dreams that carried me forward and burned brightly in young adulthood lost their luster years ago.
My twenty-something self would be mortified at the woman I’ve become.
I can imagine her indignant voice, hand on hip, eyes wide:
“What? No gym membership?”
“How many kids did you say you have?”
“What is this shipwreck you’ve made of our resume?”
But then, for most of us, there is a dream or two that sticks around, still cherished and yet unfulfilled. It reminds us of its presence with a subtle pressure, like a pebble in the shoe.
Dreams with a long shelf life can light a spark in middle age, or . . . they can become the seedbed for bitterness and regret. Sarah (Old Testament wife of Abraham and matriarch of the Hebrews 11 “faith chapter”) knew well the taste of disappointment and frustrated dreams. Over and over she heard about The Promise, a major topic of Abraham’s heart-to-heart talks with God:
“The Father of a Great Nation,” God had promised.
“Children as innumerable as the stars in the sky,”
God had spoken, and Sarah had worked hard to believe.
“If Abraham’s the father, that makes me the mother. Doesn’t it? Couldn’t we get started with just one . . .?”
As the years wore down Sarah’s hope and her joints, she may have found remedies to ease arthritis, but nothing took the edge off yearning.
Then one day when Sarah was 90 years old, the promise came once again. Picture an arid landscape. Abraham, now a very old man, is resting in the doorway of his tent to escape the heat of the day. Three men approach, and the gracious old gent hops up to show lavish hospitality, Middle-Eastern style. (Genesis 18:1-16)
Is it possible that Abraham and Sarah recognized one of their visitors as the angel of the Lord? This pre-incarnate embodiment of God the Son carried news that made Sarah’s heart skip a beat as she listened through the tent wall:
“Abraham, when I see you again, your wife, Sarah, will have a son.”
Twenty-four years had passed since this promise was first spoken out loud, and for the first time, Sarah was hearing that her own DNA was also important to its fulfillment. And suddenly there was a time frame on the table! This was all too much for her heart to absorb, and the text goes on to record Sarah’s response there, in the privacy of her tent:
She laughed.
Quietly, she snorted her disbelief in a laugh that carried an embedded sneer. Bitterness had been plowed underground as she wondered if, maybe, she had misunderstood God’s intentions. Gradually, her hope had faded as the years had passed: empty womb, empty arms, empty promise.
And may I ask, tenderly:
How long have you been waiting for your dream to materialize?
While others have moved forward into solid futures that look crazily like the one you’ve imagined, you feel as if, somehow, you’ve been left standing still.
Tired, faith stretched thin, the idea that anything good could happen, that blessing could wash up on your personal shore . . .? Pfffff . . . Snort! Do you feel a cynical chuckle coming on?
Time bound and short-sighted, we need a sinewy faith to stave off bitterness when hope has been bleeding out for years.
Together, let’s join Sarah in pressing an ear against the tent wall to hear God’s words of choosing and commission. Soak in the record of prophecy fulfilled, the promises kept, the hand of God at work in stunning intervention, and then read in Psalm 126 about the laughter of dreams fulfilled that follows the tears of sowing seed and long waiting.
Can we trust the God who filled Sarah’s empty womb to fill our empty hearts? He longs to come to your tent, to lock eyes, and to share a meal with you. Listen carefully, and let the smile spread slowly over your incredulous face, for the truth is that He brings good news — and it’s for you.

So good to be reading your words here today. I had to chuckle over the line about the “shipwreck I’ve made of my resume” lol. How true. “Stay at Home Mom” somehow doesn’t seem LinkedIn worthy….but I wouldn’t change a thing in that department. I have learned that God’s timing is certainly not our timing….I waiting a long time for a marriage that had God as the cornerstone. But it was worth the wait. In our economy we want everything yesterday, but I take hope in Sarah and Abraham’s story that God brought about His promise in their very old age, and yes I would have snorted as I laughed too.

I think it’s important for us to affirm (for ourselves and for others) that, yes, we “wouldn’t change a thing in that department.” It’s true that the waiting can be a desperate thing, but we deepen and strengthen with our resistance to an “add water and stir” mentality. Amen to that, Becky! Michele, it’s like you’ve been eavesdropping on me during one of my down and dirty dream days. And, bless our sweet, little earthbound hearts, sometimes God’s numerous recounting of His servants waiting long and hard aren’t enough. Why do we think it will be different for us? Like you, Joanne, I’m seeing that God enlarges our lives and our families and, consequently, our hearts as we grow older and our families expand as the crowd around our dining room table each day contracts. It’s an act of faith to separate all the strands of our lives as our dreams become tangled around the dreams of our kids and grandkids.
I’m so thankful for the hand of God in all of this, and for His wisdom in knowing how to implement the next step.

Twenty-eight years ago I was dreaming of a baby like Sarah. Today that baby is following the world in a selfish pursuit of happiness. Yesterday on the last day of her visit she told me that the “church is okay, it’s their doctrine about Jesus and sin and all that that is nonsense.” I asked her if she thought that what her dad and I have dedicated our lives to and based our lives on was nonsense and she said, “Basically.” We have three other children following the Lord, but this one is breaking our hearts. Her marriage is falling apart and her poor little baby girl is bearing the brunt of it. Now I just want God to work in their lives. She’s been following her own way for 8 years now and waiting is very hard. I’m going to look at Psalm 126 now. Thank you. (Visiting through Manic Monday on “Sisters Spurring Sisters”.)

Sharon, thank you for opening your heart here about this ache for a much-loved daughter. I don’t think there’s anything that can adequately prepare us for the sadness of a child who rejects the truth and then lives according to their chosen lie.
Just yesterday, I heard our pastor in his Sunday morning sermon challenging parents in this situation to pray for the salvation of their prodigals. This is a good application of the Psalm 126 sowing with tears. May God strengthen you for the journey,and give you grace to keep on loving and being there for your daughter and granddaughter.
Those if us in the body of Christ need to hear stories like this to keep us on our knees and to remind us that there is no guarantee that our children will choose a following life. Sharon, you are in my prayers today.

Thank you for praying for a stranger. Sometimes I tell God I’m sorry that I need to have problems to keep me on my knees. If only I would seek Him as urgently when things are going well. The pain is fresh at the moment so I am sowing in tears.

I can’t help but think the twenty-something me would be mortified at the me I am now, too… but the twenty-something me didn’t see things the way I do now, either.
Life did not turn out the way I planned it. At. All.
That being said, there are still dreams inside, the most important of which is the dream that when I finally see my Master, He will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
And it’s good to note, I’m not done yet. After all. Moses didn’t start on his life’s work until age 80, and as you just pointed out, Sarah didn’t start mothering until 90!

Michele, For the past month, I read Genesis through five times, in storybook form without chapter and verse markings. It was a wonderful exercise and one that I will use from now on when studying the Bible. Every time I came by the part about Sarah laughing, it always gave me pause, but until I read your post, I realized that I too “laugh ” when I am entering into a situation that seems impossible to me by human standards, rather than realizing that the Lord equips me for every situation and I am victorious in Him no matter what the outcome.
I also came to realize recently, that I do have dreams. I used to not relate to people who said they had dreams, but I do, and too often I have laughed in those situations as well, but God, He is able to make our God-focused dreams come true.

When I was younger, time got away from me as I chased after two young boys and pursued teaching. Now I not only have the chance to dream but God is opening up the door for them to come true.

Thank you, Mary. It’s true that we have seasons of life that are pretty much dictated by circumstances, the needs that surround us, the people standing in line for our time and attention.
My dream some days is just to find the top of my kitchen counter!
But I’m seeing a tiny window of dream-space opening as my family grows, and trusting God for grace to be fully present in the daily-ness while giving space and oxygen to the new and the challenging.

Michele – I know the intent of your post was to inspire but I have to admit it left me feeling a little sad for the dreams that didn’t come true and most likely won’t. I have pressed my ear to the tent and followed God’s dreams for my life. But every once in awhile I stop and wonder why I didn’t get a glamorize dream, mine is hard, challenging, and painful. Of course I know everyone has challenges and pain and comparing is a waste of time. So then after sulking for a bit I take it to God and he ever so kindly whispers in my ear just what I need to hear to keep going. Thank you for reminding me to take it all to God. Maree, you’ve put your finger on one of the hardest realities of the Christian faith: happy endings are not guaranteed. I struggle with this myself, particularly when God says “no” to something and I don’t understand why. And, of course, Sarah was blessed with the birth of Isaac, but so many women remain childless. What I tried to capture in my reference to Psalm 126 is the already/not yet of so much of the fulfillment of God’s promises. Even so, those who wait for healing or for the fulfillment of a dream have a huge faith test on their hands, possibly all the days of their life. Praying for you, Maree, that the Lord will meet you in your challenge and your pain with blessing that helps in the carrying.

It is. Absolutely challenging, and I think it’s the biggest stumbling block in my Christian walk. I can always tell when my heart has slipped away from truth and a strong embrace of ultimate values, because I begin questioning God’s goodness and the regrets and bitterness seep into my days.

Our hearts want to know that we are included. When I noticed that all the conversations up to that point had been between Abraham and God, that there had been no mention of Sarah’s name, I wondered. Actually, I wondered if that was behind the whole Hagar and Ishmael debacle, but whether or not it played a role, I still think it was so kind of God to bring Sarah into the circle in this encounter.
