On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome back our friend Julie Dibble to God-sized Dreams. She is sharing how God used a getaway to teach her about being grateful in the every day! Thanks for being here today, Julie!
Recently, I returned from a getaway with my husband. Many people raised their eyebrows when I told them our chosen spot. In the cold of January the beach offered us solace, a calm change of scenery.
We had a wonderful time blessed by God above. With less pressure and childcare responsibilities, my husband and I met each other with integrity. The desire to connect, holding hands, talking and walking the sands together was strong and genuine.
Our first morning, rays of moonlight sneaked through the thin linen curtains. I was excited to leap out of bed and look at the sky God gives us every day: the one that is bursting with color but still somehow black. I yearned to bear witness to the changing of the guards as Night leaves, and Day arrives.
After spending time in His Word, the beach beckoned me. With anticipation, my hurried steps took me to our room. Jason was still snug deep under the covers of our borrowed king-size bed. Though he smiles, he does not show action to join me in my journey down the street to the beach.
Joy in my soul of anticipating God’s greatness is what brought me and my jammies to where the ocean meets the wakening sky. Just breathtaking and gorgeous. Lingering, I took a few pictures and cast my eyes over the endless ocean surface. No moon and no sun; God stilled the sky with an incredible orange sunrise-expectancy.
The beauty overwhelmed me.
Waiting for a sunrise on a cold ransomed beach by choice is acceptable to my soul. Returning home with my husband after this glorious weekend did not seem to flow with peace in my heart. Kid-drama, questions, dinner needed in a couple of hours, school tomorrow, bills to pay…
As the week wore on, the laundry piled, and my husband’s focus turned to work My mood plummeted. Inspiration to write seemed as far away as the meeting of the sea and the Heavens.
Where did the fruits of my spirit that were so profoundly present over the weekend go? Nothing earth-shattering happened; we simply returned home. Our family of four picked up where we left off before my husband’s and my escape. Sadly, my heart was not pleasing to God: bored and frustrated with the mundane tasks of living.
Be thankful in all circumstances; for this is the God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT)
All circumstances, says Our Lord, not just the ones separate from daily stresses. When I forget to be thankful, I am reacquainting with the selfishness born in me, taking a devilish detour. Gently, the Spirit reminded me to seek steadfast faith examples.
“For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ. And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.” (Philippians 1:13-14)
Paul, God’s miracle in heart-transformation, continued to love and praise Jesus in the face of imprisonment. Paul sent snail mail from prison to several churches because he saw no barriers to spreading the Good News across the lands. Paul wanted those of us who did not have the honor of hearing Jesus teach to “grow and experience the joy of your faith”. (Philippians 1:25).
Humbled, I pray again and again:
Please, Dear Lord, accept my thanks for all You have created. The beauty You have blessed us with shows Your Universe-Power and love for us. Please forgive me for being selfish in my approach to my family, whom you have blessed upon me. I pray for Your Spirit to energize me to embrace Your whole purpose for me: to be a loving mom when I am collecting sweaty socks and when I watch my child succeed on the basketball court; to be a loving wife when I am cooking the 3rd meal of the day and when I am on a date with my husband; to be a loving Daughter of God when I strain to be aware of each God-given breath and when I have the privilege to witness a God-blessed beach-beauty . In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen
Are there burdens in your daily life that pull you away from the truth of who God is? Join me in setting our hearts and our minds back to the One who created beauty in the getaway and the mundane!
