The Comfort Zone of Fear

Fear as a comfort zone

The Comfort Zone of Fear

On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome Julie Wilson, our graphics ninja and social media extraordinaire, to God-sized Dreams. She is sharing about the comfort zone of fear. Thanks for being here, Julie!

This fall, I had an opportunity in front of me for over two months and I avoided it like the plague.

Decision-making is NOT one of my strengths.

I did not want to say “no” because I have a pretty strong case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). At the same time I did not want to say “yes” because I don’t feel qualified. It involves a whole lot of learning by doing, which I know is a great way to learn but scares me to death. Also, my schedule lately does not have any wiggle room in it.

… or does it?

What began as fear turned into procrastination which led to laziness and finally indifference, which will get you nowhere in the pursuit of God-sized Dreams.

Fear became just another excuse.

When faced with a decision or opportunity, I can come up with 101 reasons, no… EXCUSES, why it won’t work or how I’m going to fail or what could possibly go wrong. And fear became my crutch.

Fear can become a comfort zone.

Maybe you are using fear as a crutch, too? Fear can become a comfort zone. It’s not where you really want to be, but it’s safe because it is well known. I’m so used to my fear that I blame that fear for my lack of action when it’s really laziness, avoidance, lack of priorities, and wasted time that keep me from getting off my butt and taking just one baby step toward pursuing the dreams on my heart.

Just one baby step can break you out of the comfort zone of fear.

For me, the first step was finally replying to that opportunity email. The second step was writing this blog post. The third step is reminding myself what the Bible says about fear.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV

Fear not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10 KJV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer & supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

The fourth step is asking for help and maybe a little bit of accountability.

When I create graphics for the God-sized Dreams social media sites, most of the time it is something I need to hear. I’m just sitting over here preaching to myself and hoping that maybe, somewhere out there, someone feels the same way.

Can we promise to encourage each other? I’ll take on this new task and do my best to serve all you God-sized Dreamers—Will you keep me accountable?

If things get quiet on the God-sized Dreams social media pages will you yell at me to get out of my comfort zone of fear?
