On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome Lorraine Reep to God-sized Dreams. She shares that often your God-sized Dreams are realized over time. Thanks for being here today, Lorraine!
In the ninth grade my favorite class was English. Words were so much easier for me than numbers. Writing was fun; it seemed so natural. I allowed myself a “rare for me” dream that I might one day write something that real people – not my teachers out of obligation – but actual normal people would choose to read.
I married right after high school, became a mother just over a year later. My dream of being called a writer was forgotten. I was content for the next forty-three years to read other people’s stories.
I embarked on my writing journey one year ago after being challenged by Bruce Wilkinson. I read his book The Dream Giver and I couldn’t escape the dream that bubbled up after so many years of being pushed down.
These words would not leave me alone:
I could hear God speaking to me: “You do have a dream. It’s part of what it means to be you, created in my image.”
Starting my blog was like walking out on to the high dive and jumping into the deep end of the pool. I knew that if I tarried long on the ladder or took too much time once I was on the board I would lose my nerve. So I just jumped right into my God-sized dream, the thing that I always wanted to do but had convinced myself I couldn’t.
Without fail, I’ve posted every week. There were times when I had absolutely nothing. I sat at my computer and asked God for words. And every single time, He gives me a story.
In those early days, in spite of my uncertainly, there were things I thought I knew for sure.
I thought only my family and friends would read my blog.
The truth is, many of them don’t but I have learned not to take it personally. Conversely, as I review the list of people who have liked my Facebook page and subscribed to my blog I realize I’ve met many new friends. There will be haters. Bruce Wilkinson said it well. “Not everybody is going to agree with your dream. I’m sure you’ve had border bullies in your life…And what we don’t want to do is focus upon them.”
I thought that other bloggers (especially women) would be territorial, keeping their knowledge and “tips and tricks” close to the vest.
Nothing could be further from the truth. A blogger friend literally sent me files for my Facebook fan page and virtually held my hand through the process. She was relentless and she was right. I needed that page to promote my blog. I have a new appreciation for the beauty of a woman’s heart when she is pursuing God’s heart.
I thought that I would be writing in a vacuum.
For a while, it seemed true. Friends were polite when I talked about my latest story or discussed what I was learning, but I knew they weren’t into it. While I don’t mind being alone, isolation terrifies me. Just as I was feeling deserted, I messaged a blogger I admire and held my breath. She wrote back and she assured me that she “wasn’t famous”. She introduced me to her tribe and now they are mine. Blogging groups and linkups have helped me discover so many gifted writers and beautiful friends.
If you are where I was a year ago, I hope my story encourages you. Our words are powerful and we have the privilege and joy of arranging them in such a way that they bless and inspire. Jump in and I promise, you’ll be surrounded by other writers who will give you a life ring when you need it.
You have a dream; go after it, because it is part of what God had in mind when he formed you in His image.
“But with your own eyes you saw my body being formed.
Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything I would do.”
Psalm 139:16 (CEV)
