On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we welcome Karen Johnson to God-sized Dreams. She shares how God has cultivated her dreams from childhood and how He is still doing that in new ways today. Thanks for being here today, Karen!
As a little girl, I often dreamed of my life and what I wanted to do. I remember always wanting to create and to do something BIG for God. As the years have progressed I still have the same dreams, layered with the clarity and reality of adulthood.
I create. As a child, art class produced some pretty interesting pieces, but rarely did my project match the picture in my head. I remember being frustrated that I couldn’t do more or that I didn’t have materials that would work. Today, God has blessed me with the ability to sew and quilt. It took me a few years, but my dream of creating has grown into an ability to provide for my family. In 2013, I launched my own Etsy shop, RedBarnCrafting.
My shop specializes in custom pieces for babies. I LOVE the ability to craft something completely different and unique to each baby. I was even blessed by a friend with graphic design skills who created the fabrics for my Baby Griffin Line, a set of baby friendly fantasy based products.
This isn’t the only dream God has laid on my heart. As a student, God impressed on me a deep desire to serve Him, specifically with students. I was blessed with a pastor who encouraged and nurtured my passion, teaching me how to minister. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized how difficult it would be to serve as a woman in ministry!
It seemed like it took forever, but finally several years ago our church took a chance and hired me as a part-time youth minister. My husband and I were able to work together as pastor/youth pastor to build a student ministry from the ground up. We were able to see God do some mighty works in our students lives, leading them closer to God, seeing passions for ministry develop, and hurts healed. We loved it.
After 4 years, God called Jonathan and I in a new direction. In July we stepped out of ministry for a time, and have spent the last few months seeking God’s will and direction for our family. He has made several things abundantly clear:
- I am still creating! I’m still brimming with ideas everything from toddler backpacks to dragonskin wings for dress up! God has blessed me with a dream to create and after years of wondering how I’ve finally developed the technical skill to do it. My shop is still tiny in the grand scheme of Etsy shops, but I can’t wait to see where God takes it!
- We are not done in ministry. Jonathan and I still love students, and in this time of searching God has brought us to a new church family where we can use our gifts and explore exactly what God wants us to do with them.
My childhood dreams are coming true in ways I wouldn’t have expected! 10 years from now I fully expect God to have taken me further, both in crafting and in ministry!
Do you have a God-sized Dream story to tell? We’d love to have you share your journey with us!
