On Tuesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome Jenn Hand, who shares about the amazing things God can do when we are willing to say, “Yes!”
I had a dream. I felt God’s calling on my life to serve Him as a missionary starting when I was 8 years old sitting in the little chairs listening to fascinating missionary stories. I remember making a salt map of Ghana and telling God I wanted to serve Him somewhere like that—that was as I was sneaking bites of the salt map because didn’t we all eat play dough at some point in our life.
That God sized dream took many twists and turns but ended up in an appointment as a full time career missionary sent out to serve in South Asia. I packed all my God sized dreams in my oversized suitcase, said goodbye to all the comforts of home, and went to serve.
At one point, living out this calling did not feel like a dream at all. When we think we have to be perfect in our God sized dreams—they can become nightmares.
I found myself one night face down before God on the dirt floor of a village home. I was telling God He must be disappointed in me—the girl who packed her God sized dreams of being a perfect missionary into that suitcase. At the time I was not loving the people, the circumstances, the food—I wanted running water and a real toilet BAD.
I felt God must be disappointed in me. I heard Him whisper back to my heart.
I do not NEED you – I want you.
The God of the universe didn’t need my God sized dreams but He wanted me to dream them. He wanted me to come to Him, open handed with these dreams, and be Held in the palm of His hand.
My identity was not in my dream, it was in the one who dreamed me up. (<===Click to Tweet) The God who Psalms 139 style knew all about me, even when I settled on the far side of the sea.
Often our God sized dreams change. It makes me want to shout glory that though our dreams may change, the giver of our dreams does not.
James 1:17 Every good gift (including the gift of dreams) comes down from the Father of lights who does not change. And His dreams for us are more than we could ever ask or imagine.
Although I thought I would live and die on the mission field, God had another field of dreams for me. He called me back to my hometown to start a ministry in 2012 called Coming Alive Ministries. We exist to provide an invitation for people to come alive through conference, retreats and resources.
He took this girl who is so unorganized I cannot find my keys MOST of the time, and asked me to start a ministry from scratch with a board of directors, a 501(c)3 and a dream.
And God. God has provided, pursued and planned out more than I knew to pray for.
He had me, last minute Lucy, always procrastinating Polly, write a devotional book 31 Days to Coming Alive to encourage friends I may never get to have coffee with in real life to connect their hearts to Christ and come alive. He has blown me away each step of the way.
The most important part?
In each step of living out my God sized dreams, He has reminded me. I do not need you. I want you. (<===Click to Tweet)
You can let go of having to have the perfect details written in your dream, because God is in the design.
You can enjoy and come alive as you dream because you are wanted. You are chosen. You are His.
