On Wednesdays we are thrilled to fling open the doors to all of YOU! We love hearing your dreaming stories…the lessons you’ve learned, the roads you’ve walked, the dreams He’s planted in your hearts! Today we are excited to welcome Kathy Cheek back to God-sized Dreams. She shares a story to remind us that our Father has many ways of showing His love for His children. Thanks for being here today, Kathy!
I think before we consider or dream about what God has for us, we probably need to have some idea of who we are in Him and much of that is rooted in knowing He loves us. Before I believe God would choose to work wonderful things in my life, I need to know that I even matter to Him. (<====Tweet this.)
As a young Christian and new believer, I knew Jesus demonstrated His love for me when He willingly died on Calvary’s cross for my sins, but I didn’t immediately understand that He would want to have an ongoing daily relationship with me.
Oh, but I am glad I learned that lesson because it changed the course of my life.
The defining moment when I first understood God’s love for me happened when my car broke down on the interstate highway in Nashville, Tennessee when I was twenty one years old in the summer of 1979 and making a long road trip alone to visit an out of state friend. I was driving from Kentucky to Louisiana, and there were no cell phones when I was single and in my twenties.
When I reached Nashville, it was close to noon and traffic was heavy. I was just passing through and driving in the far left lane when my car quickly started losing power – and I could tell it was dying! I felt extremely panicky as I quickly checked mirrors and changed lanes to make it safely into the far right lane as the car completely lost power and I coasted onto the shoulder of the highway.
My thoughts were instantly filled with questions about how I was going to get help, be helped, get to a place that could fix my car and would I have enough money to pay for it? I was hundreds of miles from anyone I knew, and no one could come to my rescue. My heart felt overwhelmed and I knew my only help was God, and somehow He would have to show up and help me!
I closed my eyes and put my head on the steering wheel to cry out to the Lord in prayer, and as I said, “Lord, help me!”- someone had already pulled over to see if they could help. It was a very pleasant, kind, unthreatening looking older gentleman. I whispered silently to the Lord, “I have to trust this person, You sent him, didn’t You?”
The gentleman said something about having a daughter my age, and if she had car trouble, he would want a compassionate person to stop and help her. My heart filled with God’s peace and I thanked the man repeatedly for being the compassionate person to stop and help me, and told him that he was the answer to my prayer.
Amazingly, where my car had coasted to a stop was right before an exit and at the exit was a gas station. I don’t think my rescuer ever gave me his name, but he pushed my car with his car, while I had it in neutral, and we were able to make it to the gas station. It turned out to only be a burned wire that needed replaced and the gas station attendant fixed it for only $3.00.
The entire situation could not have gone smoother for a young woman having car trouble far from home and with very little money. I cried happy tears the rest of my trip.
I knew God loved me, but in that moment when He rescued me and took care of me the way He did, I knew His love deeper than ever before. I also learned that He knew where I was at any moment and that He is always with me.
From that moment forward I never doubted His deep abiding love for me. From that moment forward I knew I was loved with a God-Sized love. (<====Tweet this.)
It is with this God-Sized love that He also loves you!
“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
Jeremiah 31:3 (NKJV)
